Mining The Unconscious: The Artist’s Journey

Art is a numinous human expression of the Sacred. The film, Mining the Unconscious is a riveting and true celebration of life, as well as a tribute to C.G. Jung’s profound contribution to the field of transpersonal psychology, culture and the language of the collective unconscious. The film depicts the landscape of inner experience in a quest for spiritual and cultural renewal. Artists excavate stories and revelations in the profound territory of the soul. While watching this creative process, the viewer is brought into a stunning illumination of transformation and healing, born from dreams, myths, and archetypes.

For the filmmaker, the process of collaboration with the painters, sculptors, photographers, and storytellers revealed that Nature herself was Muse and primal source of creativity. Ms. Martin envisioned the film as a flowing river from the artist healing Self, the artist healing others, and finally, arriving at the very origins of art – the artist as shaman healing community. On this ground, we find Connectedness. We find Heart. We find Inspiration.

“BELIEF” is a journey to four lands – the Canadian Arctic, Tahiti, Japan and China – to listen to the beliefs of their people.
Four stories about the importance of ancestors and what has been handed down to us for hundreds of years.

Ayurveda – The science of life

Ayurveda attracts more and more people, the subject is haunted by newspapers, magazines, talk shows and wellness offers. Ayurveda centres are springing up like mushrooms – in the East as well as in the West. At the beginning of November 2019, German Chancellor Angela Merkel signed a declaration of intent with India on the Ayurvedic medical system. A well-founded examination of the topic is on the agenda, so that Ayurveda can not be understood as pseudo-medicine, but rather as a universally applicable, alternative healing method and way of life with millennia-old tradition.

Ayurveda is much more than just a special healing method, a special kind of massage or a conscious possibility of nutrition. Ayurveda is more than just a slogan, Ayurveda is a way of life and the knowledge of life par excellence. The aim of Ayurvedic medicine is to prevent disease through a healthy lifestyle and, if the disease has already occurred, to restore the balance of body and mind through a wide range of holistic therapies.

Ayurveda is a universal knowledge, therefore it is not only applicable in India but worldwide. It describes a science that has integrated universally valid principles into a uniquely diverse medical system. What the holy men, the Rishis, wrote down thousands of years ago in the Vedas and what they received in deepest meditation can be found again in many advanced cultures in different countries of the earth. In contrast to other advanced civilizations, however, the ancient knowledge of this profound healing method has been preserved in India.

The film team, consisting of cameraman and producer Helmut Lechthaler, meditation teacher and author Markus Dietl, co-author Astrid Kofler and Ayurveda doctor Dr. Abilash Anand, travelled all over India and created in sensitive pictures an overall picture of Ayurveda, interspersed with interviews with Indian Ayurveda doctors, gurus and outstanding specialists on the various branches of Ayurveda. The medicine, the architecture and the nutrition, – the Ayurveda flows into all areas of life. The film “Ayurveda – the knowledge of life” informs and clarifies, offers a fascinating insight into the versatility of this special way of life.

As planet Earth is dying, a child takes off a three step adventure: the journey in a space capsule, the arrival on a faraway island where she finds a tree worshipping Hermit and becomes an adult, the meeting with two pilgrims who will contribute to her questioning how to be in the world and relate with alterity. A meditation between sci-fi, spirituality and ecology on our relationship with time and matter and on the reasons for the environmental catastrophe we are going through. If the island, in contrast with the Earth, is still alive, it is probably because it is populated with creatures such as the pilgrims who ignore concepts like attachment and conditioning and believe we are all part of a whole: “The barriers known in my childhood collapsed in an instant. Collapsed over and over. Here I was, eternally, None. None on the island”. By drawing from David Bohm and Jiddu Krishnamurti’s dialogues, the film is a journey of consciousness in an autumnal landscape where birds sing and the boundaries between human and non-human blur: “You are the space where all experiences happen. But you are None, none of them”.

A Brief History of Time Travel

Time travel reaches far beyond the realm of science fiction. From early stories featuring heroes mysteriously falling into far-flung future worlds to countless appearances in literature, the idea of traveling through time has spanned cultures across the globe and is one of the most contagious ideas in science fiction. In a society where time is a unit of value and instant gratification is prized, the idea of traveling through time offers a means of escape. And our obsession with time travel is growing: in the last decade, it’s appeared more than ever in books, movies, and pop culture. What makes time travel so powerful that it resonates in each of us, and to what lengths are we going today to make it a reality?

Through interviews with experts across a variety of fields – theoretical physicists, game designers, spiritual leaders to futurist authors, A Brief History of Time Travel explores how this idea has inspired some of the prominent intellectual minds of today, and how it has influenced their work.

Trail of the Sphinx

A recreation and reimagining of past grandeur, Trail of the Sphinx, evolves such splendor into a very special multimedia presentation. The music is a blend of cultural sensibilities, modern and ancient motifs; electronic and acoustic instrumentation. The dances are a synthesis of traditional Middle Eastern with a contemporary interpretation; symbolic and at times sensual. The production mixes these performances against the dramatic backdrop of Egypt’s archaeological treasures creating an expansive cinematic interpretation. The result is a meditation on the eternal mystery of the legendary Sphinx that leads us from the old world to a future one. The shifting sands of time may obscure its path, yet we are still drawn to its compelling destiny.

Wild Honey: Caring for bees in a divided land

For more than a century, the island of Timor has been divided by a colonial border. This border has displaced and separated the people of Lookeu, dividing their land, water and history. Timor’s migratory wild honey bees challenge this division. Their migrations are essential to the agricultural and spiritual wellbeing of the people and places who depend upon them.
In community honey harvest rituals, queen bees are courted in ceremony by men who climb high into the canopy to sing nocturnal forest love songs. These songs express gratitude to the bees, enticing and imploring them to give up their sweetness and maintain their seasonal visits.
This film is the outcome of a long-term collaboration between researchers Balthasar Kehi and Lisa Palmer and the people of Balthasar’s homeland of Lookeu. It portrays a border community who, despite changing farming practices and increasing commodification, are determined to maintain the bees’ movement across the region and preserve their shared identity.

“Love Me Not” is a titillating, stylized film version of the Biblical story of John the Baptist and Salomé largely takes place in an army camp in the desert, against the background of a contemporary war. Salomé (Ingrid García-Jonsson) is the daughter of the corrupt commander and his adulterous wife; the prophet is locked up in a cave because of his subversive predictions. Just as in Oscar Wilde’s interpretation, Salomé is obsessed by the prisoner (and all the men in the camp by her).
The film shows the universal absurdity of politics, violence and the whole gamut of human emotions behind them: lust, greed and pride. The beauty of the landscape and sensually filmed bodies contrast with the coarse cruelty of war and the shameless opportunism of the characters. The world has become a place where there’s no room for purity and truth. A stimulating mixture of mythology and modernity, dream and reality, humour and cynicism.

A Winter’s Grave

A Winter’s Grave is a short film by Australian writer/director Joel Stephen Birnie. It is an experimental manifestation of the director’s narrative poem titled ‘The Winter Moon’. The film itself exists in a type of limbo, nestled somewhere between silence and whispers, realism and dreamscape. It presents not only a narrative centred around ‘psychography’ (automatic/spirit writing), it also (somewhat controversially) utilised a psychographic methodology in its very production. A collaboration with the director’s mother (in her first film appearance), who herself hails from a long and documented lineage of spiritualists reaching back at least 150 years, A Winter’s Grave pays homage to a revered familial culture.
